Course Description:
This program is designed to train students to draw blood from patients or donors in hospital, blood bank, or similar facility for analysis or other medical purposes. Student must complete 80 clock hours of theory and 100 clock hours of externship. This is a hybrid program that is offered in the morning, afternoon and weekends.
Course Objective:
The student enrolled in this course upon completion will be able to define key medical terms and abbreviations. Understand the evolution of phlebotomy and the role of the phlebotomist in today’s healthcare setting. Know the basic concepts of communication as they relate to healthcare and how appearance and nonverbal messages affects the communication process. Describe the proper telephone protocol in the laboratory. Demonstrate an awareness of the different types of healthcare settings. Compare types of third-party payers, coverage, and methods of payment to the patient, provider, and institutions. Demonstrate knowledge of infection control and safety. Demonstrate basic understanding of the anatomy and physiology and body systems and anatomic terminology in order to relate major areas of the clinical laboratory to general pathologic conditions associated with the body systems. Demonstrate knowledge of collection procedure, equipment and specimen integrity in the delivery of patient care. Demonstrate understanding of requisitioning, specimen transport and specimen processing. Understand and demonstrate quality assurance and quality control in phlebotomy.
Externship/Clinical:
Each course listed has clinical sessions built into the curriculum to provide each student with the hands on skills needed to perform skills required in the work place. The academic information taught in the classroom will reinforce the hands on learning each student will receive in the externship site. There will be a ratio of 10 students per instructor; each student will be supervised, by a Registered Nurse Instructor as to the proper procedure for each clinical task. Evaluation of the task will be appraised on a clinical form. All clinical practicum will take place Monday through Friday during regular business hours.

Entrance Requirements:
- Must be 18 years of age
- High school diploma or its equivalent
- Current photo ID
- Provide a current CORI check before taking part in the training
- Ability to stand or walk for long periods
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs and to reach overhead is required for Patient Care Technicians and Medical Assistant and Administrative Assistants
- Pass reading & math assessment (Patient Care Technicians and Phlebotomy students must score 75%, Medical Assistant and Administrative Assistants must score 80%)
- Proof of personal health insurance (requested but not required)
- Proof of Professional Liability Insurance
Medical Documentation Requirements:
- MMR (measles, mumps, rubella)
- Tetanus/Diptheria booster
- Hepatitis B Vaccine/Antibodies
- Varicella (chickenpox) immunity
- Provide a negative PPD reading or normal chest x-ray within 12 months
- Provide negative drug screen
- Current physical examination
- Proof of COVID-19 Vaccination or a valid letter of exemption

Enrollment Requirements
Phlebotomy Technician Program
To enroll in the hybrid (online and in-person) Phlebotomy Technician program, students must meet the following criteria:
- 18 years of age or older
- Proof of high school diploma, GED or its equivalent
- Pass the entrance exam with an 80% score
- Current physical examination and immunizations (MMR (measles, mumps, rubella,), Tetanus/Diptheria booster, Hepatitis B Vaccine series/Antibodies, Varicella (chickenpox) immunity)
- Negative result for PPD (Mantoux test and negative chest x-ray) that is valid until the course completion
- Negative drug screen
- Criminal background check (CORI)
- Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs and to reach overhead
- Ability to stand or walk for long periods
- Proof of personal health insurance
- Proof of Professional Liability Insurance
- Proof of COVID Vaccination or provide a valid exemption/declination document
- Proof of a current flu shot or provide a valid exemption/declination document
- Have an American Heart Association CPR/BLS Certificate before the start of clinical rotation/externship. This training is offered on campus by an approved American Heart Association instructor.
- Provide a valid government-issued picture ID (Passport, ID Card, Driver’s License, etc.)
- To attend any of our online classes, students enrolling in any hybrid program MUST have a personal computer, internet access and download Zoom.
